At Kennel & Paddock, we are keen to assist students with their further education wherever possible. However, due to the high demand, we are only able to offer work experience to a selection of students. Please read our policy for taking students below.
Students under the age of 16 years
Unfortunately our public liability insurance does not cover us for students under the age of 16 years, so if you are under 16, Kennel & Paddock is unable to take you out on placement.
Undergraduate students (over 16 years)
If you are planning to study for a BSc in Human Physiotherapy with the intention of specialising further with an MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy at Hartpury or Liverpool, or are planning to study veterinary medicine, we would be pleased to take you out on placement. We can currently offer one day’s work experience with each of our veterinary physiotherapists. If extra days are required (and depending on our time of year), we may be able to offer more. If you are planning to study another course, please email our office and we will consider your request.
Please be aware that for reasons of safety and insurance, these placements are purely observational. There is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and observe varied physiotherapy conditions and treatments, but we are unable to teach or allow hands-on experience.
Our physiotherapists are based at Kennel & Paddock and travel to various veterinary practices. Please be prepared to make your own way to these locations. In some cases, students can be dropped at a first call, but this is not always possible.
Please note that with any of these placements, you are expected to have adequate insurance of your own.
Booking your work experience
Please email your enquiry (taking into consideration our above policy) to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include your name, age, current situation and proposed work-experience dates, and one of our admin team will correspond with you.
We are only able to offer clinical education placements to postgraduate students who are qualified physiotherapists and who are completing a master’s degree at Hartpury College or Liverpool University. We are not able to offer placements to those completing Veterinary Physiotherapy courses at other establishments (such as Harper Adams or Nottingham).
Where appropriate, the educating physiotherapist will allow hands-on clinical experience but this is not always possible or appropriate within a private case load.
We can consider more than two days’ experience for eligible students by adequate prior arrangement. Please email our office to arrange a clinical education placement.
Kennel & Paddock is pleased to consider overseas students for work experience where appropriate, so long as it falls within our scope of practice. A maximum of three consecutive days can be considered. However, please note that we are not in a position to be able to offer apprenticeship-type placements. Students wishing to learn how to become chartered veterinary physiotherapists must seek this training at BSc and MSc level at the appropriate establishments.
Further information for work-experience students
Please always be prompt for your placement and allow for traffic at rush hour.
Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Jeans are acceptable but trainers are not. It can get cold standing in stables etc., so bring extra clothes in the winter and a decent waterproof jacket. ACPAT students are asked to wear ACPAT-branded clothing where possible.
It is advisable to bring your own lunch and refreshments, because we often work in relatively remote locations.
Some work-experience days can be long (sometimes 12-hour days); please be prepared for this.
